Intermediate level leading to a bachelor’s degree

All courses on this level, except for the bachelor’s thesis course, are given in English. For information about prerequisites and special admittance requirements, please check the course site and syllabus.

We recommend that you alternate semesters in economics with courses in other main areas. That way, you will already know when you are applying if you are eligible.

Suggested course of study during the second semester of economics

Intermediate macroeconomics, 7.5 ECTS
Intermediate microeconomics, 7.5 ECTS
Empirical methods in economics, I, 7.5 ECTS
One optional course in economics, 7.5 ECTS

Third semester of economics

Bachelor’s thesis in economics, 15 ECTS (taught in Swedish)
Two optional courses in economics, 7.5 ECTS each

Advanced level leading to a master’s degree

The Department of Economics offers a fully international two-year master’s programme consisting of compulsory courses in economic theory and empirical methods (45 credits), elective courses (45 credits), and a master's thesis (30 credits). The language of study is English and the programme starts every autumn.

During your third semester, you can apply to write your thesis in our internship programme. We currently work with the Ministry of Finance, the Ministry of Education and Research, the European Commission in Stockholm, the National Institute for Economic Research, as well as other organisations relevant for economists. The application process is highly competitive and internships are only available to a limited number of students. You will write your thesis during the final semester of the programme.

Doctoral level leading to a doctoral degree

The doctoral programme in Economics at Stockholm University is a US-style programme with a total enrollment of around 70 graduate students. The programme combines first-year core courses in mathematics, microeconomics, macroeconomics, and econometrics, with second-year courses covering a broad range of specialisations. The programme is broadly considered to be one of the very best in Europe and the vast majority of students go on the global economics job market during their last year; the track record in this regard is excellent.
